Ceiling medallions are a stunning way to draw attention to a favorite light fixture or add architectural detail to an otherwise bland room. With a wide variety of styles to choose from, it can be a daunting task to pick the best ceiling medallion for each room. There are three things to keep in mind when you shop for ceiling medallions: the size of the room, the size of the light fixture or ceiling fan it will frame, and the architectural style of the room. |
|
Size Matters!
The size of the room is a major consideration. A ceiling medallion that’s too small will look lost, while one that’s too large will overwhelm the room and seem too “heavy” for the ceiling. The guidelines below are a good starting point:
Room Size Ceiling Medallion Size
150-220 sq. ft. 20-30 inches
220-300 sq. ft. 30-40 inches
300 sq. ft. or more 40 inches or larger |

These are a good starting point, but also consider how high the ceilings are. For a room with eight or nine foot ceilings, the above numbers are fairly accurate. If the ceilings are over ten feet high, you can go with a larger ceiling medallion in order to balance the scale of the room. If your room has low ceilings, consider a slightly smaller medallion to prevent it from overwhelming the ceiling and adding to the claustrophobic feel of the room. |

You’ll also want your ceiling medallions to fit the scale of your light fixtures? Do you have massive, intricately detailed crystal chandelier that is the focal point of your dining room? Don’t skimp on your choice of medallion; one that is too small or dainty will look like an afterthought. On the other hand, if you have a delicate pendant light on a slender wire, you shouldn’t choose an ornately carved, oversized medallion that will seem to swallow up the light fixture and overshadow its beauty and grace. |
|
Coordinating Your Style Ceiling medallions come in a variety of styles that may mimic white plaster, wood, or metallic finishes such as bronze or gold. Although you may fall in love with a stylish Baroque ceiling medallion, resist the urge to buy it if the room is a stately colonial with restrained lines. The medallion should enhance the style and décor of the room as a whole, not compete with it. |

The most common ceiling medallions come in white, but can be painted in color imaginable to coordinate with your room. One way to tie the architectural elements of a room together is to paint the ceiling medallion, pilasters, crown molding and other trim in the same color of paint that coordinates with the wall color. This gives a lovely continuity to the room’s décor without interfering with the architectural interest of the trims you’ve chosen. |
