Profile "Definitions" Presents: Adding Craftsman Charm with Polyurethane Columns If you’ve fallen in love with the Craftsman era of design, the perfect way to accent your home is with polyurethane craftsman columns. These square columns are central to the famous craftsman style, which focuses on meticulous attention to architectural detail that is practical and simple but elegant. Crisp, clean lines and angular shapes are the hallmark of craftsman square columns. Craftsman Columns are Ideal for Several Home Styles In the early twentieth century, the craftsman style of architecture flourished alongside the Arts and Crafts movement. Both of them featured a focus on architectural elements that had spare, understated lines rather than elaborate embellishments or scrollwork. Instead, the focus was crispness, angular details and a love for fine, masculine woodwork. Several different styles of architecture, including wonderful columns for inside and out, became popular during this time period. Today you can find examples of these styles across the country, including Craftsman, Bungalow style homes, which are compact with deep roof overhangs and spacious porches, almost always have craftsman columns on the front to support the porch roof and highlight the entrance. Many of these are tapered square columns, either with or without paneled details. Craftsman columns are sturdy and substantial looking rather than delicate. These styles of columns were originally made of wood or stone, but today you can get elegant craftsman columns in a variety of styles made from polyurethane. You can then paint them to match any color scheme, including painting them to match a variety of wood grains. Polyurethane Craftsman Columns are Available in a Variety of Styles The square shape and cleaner lines of polyurethane craftsman columns are perfect for more contemporary homes and houses from the early 1900’s. They come in a variety of styles, including paneled (with square insets mimicking the lines of the column’s edge but raised to add detail) and fluted, tapered and non-tapered. Which style of square polyurethane column you choose for your Bungalow or Mission Style home depends largely on your own personal preference and what types of millwork are already present in your home. Paneled columns or pilasters are a lovely way to frame out interior doors or built-in bookshelves, which are a common feature in homes from the Arts and Crafts era. For the porch of a home, take your inspiration from the trim around windows and doors to select a style of polyurethane column that will do justice to the lines and dimensions of the home. Tapered square columns tend to have a heavier looking, wider base than straight square columns. You’ll also find that the tapered columns are most often used as a sort of “half column,” with the lower half of the column actually being a wall or stone support, with the tapered square column resting on top of it so that the column actually starts at about waist level and tapers to the roof it supports.
